Hello, Charlie. So pleased to meet you!

We have two rescue dogs right now, Roxy and Bell. Roxy is eleven and I find it hard to imagine a life without this big, gentle, furry soul who doesn't want to go for walks without me (she'll often linger behind while my husband walks Bell).

Dogs make me a better person, more calm and joyful and connected to the earth.

I'm so glad your mother has Charlie!

P.S. I like to control things too. :)

I absolutely agree with everything you wrote and I love this story and I have beautiful stories about how my dogs came into my life and I learn again and again that the universe always has better plans for me, but I have a question: It sounds like you had fun finding all these potential dogs for your mom. And isn't that the point?

There’s so much I resonated with in your post, Satya, but this line has me smiling (or is it grimacing in uncomfortable recognition?): “I think that it was necessary for me to believe that maybe - just maybe - I didn’t know everything and that I didn’t actually run the whole Universe.” I needed that reminder! 🙏🏼

Very happy they found each other :) My own dog is such a source of joy and companionship, can’t imagine life without him.

Taking this line to heart:

“To experiment with trusting in some kind of larger process that is unfolding without me and often even despite my unhelpful interference.”

I think your Mom and Charlie are a matched set by now. Isn’t it wonderful when these quiet needs are answered with love? The unexpected blessings that find us when needed most remind us again how much we are loved by something greater than ourselves. 🙏🪷

I love Susan J.'s quote! I could have written this essay Satya. Your words often find a place deep inside, many personality similarities! It's wonderful your mum got Charlie. Pets could be the best healer ever!

I work with control a LOT with my 2 grown off-spring. Here's one of many control stories (It's long and complex but I'll abbreviate). My 36 yo was in hospital this January for alcohol abuse (he'd been living homeless for 2+ years). The doctor says, after certain tests, you need to stop or you'll die. His nurse was an angel. She walked in, we introduced ourselves, and then she turned directly at the son and began saying all the things a mother would have said/thought she should say as a parent. But this beautiful human, became "something greater"/son's higher power? and told him in no uncertain terms what would be the best course of action and she was ready to help him. I learned such a huge valuable lesson. It's not all about me (including my suffering) and we are never alone.

I hope your mum and Charlie have a lovely life together. I found your thoughts on needing to be in control really interesting and recognised similar traits in myself. Interestingly though, when I was younger I was very hedonistic and loved to get completely out of control too and used to get very drunk, to the point where I would lose all recollection of the things that happened, and also take party drugs. Now I need to ponder on those two polar opposites in me!
