It’s so interesting to read your breakdown of how IFS helps in your daily life. My partner has been exploring IFS with her counsellor in recent months and we’re both fascinated by it. From the outside, I can already see huge shifts in how she responds to life long and repeated wounds. It really is like having x-Ray specs.
I’m curious if you think the forgiveness and inclusivity also apply to people outside ourselves? Do you think it’s easier to understand other people’s seemingly irrational or harmful behaviour when you also understand that all their parts are trying to self-protect too?
Ah, glad your partner has been benefiting (and maybe you too!) And I haven't emphasised this so much in my piece but yes it has TOTALLY helped me to be more patient and kind towards others - this has been especially true as a part of my adventures with eco-activism and trying not to hate those who are involved in the oil industry, governments etc... Richard Schwartz says he's never met a part he didn't go on to become fond of once he understood why it was doing what it was doing, and he's worked a lot in prisons so he's seen some pretty hardcore parts. This doesn't mean not setting boundaries or having systems of justice etc, but I think it does go a long way towards reducing polarisation and increasing Self energy in the world. Hope that all makes sense. Thanks for being here Miranda!
It makes absolute sense, Satya. From my minimal experience with IFS I can understand how people become evangelical about it. Anything that reduces polarisation and increases empathy has to be a good thing. Very happy to be here. :) x
Every time I read one of your posts on IFS I can feel myself getting pulled further towards it and I have to keep reminding myself of the mountain of CPD I already don’t have time to do!
I’m curious how long it will be before I can’t resist any more and five in anyway. The part of me that loves learning is strong 💪 😆
I'm pretty sure you're responding to Louise here, but I have a question: what is the best way to journal from the perspective of IFS?
I was trying to do Elizabeth Gilbert's, "Dear Love, what would you have me know?" ongoing prompt, but no matter how "wise" I got, fear kept coming up. As I explored it with my therapist it seems that I have a protective shushing sort of part that wants to dole out wisdom.
But that's not working because I haven't created space for the wounded part, if that makes sense.
So does it make sense to journal from the perspective of the wounded part? Or is that too much to take on? Is there a website you could point me to with good IFS prompts?
Thanks for reading and apologies if this is too much. <3
I find this so fascinating and am grateful for you taking the time to share. Thank you!
My pleasure : )
I love your videos, Satya. 💜
Thank you 💗
